What questions should you be asking your potential employer?
When it comes to the end of an interview, you have the option to really impress your future employer by asking them some compelling questions.
It is important that a job interview offers the chance for you as a potential employee to gain knowledge and understanding of the role and the company, as well as the employer finding out all they need to know about you.
But how do you know what questions to ask in an interview?
Whilst the questions you ask are going to help you gain an understanding of the role, it is also key that they show you off in a positive light in preparation for the selection process.
It may be beneficial to start with questions which give you more information and full clarity on the role if you feel you need it. It is important to be aware of everything your new position will entail before asking any wider, more large-scale questions.
You may want to ask; what is the next step in the recruitment process? What skills and experience would make me a good fit for this role? What will a typical day in my role look like? How many people will I be working with? What will be my main targets for the first 6 months of working in the role?
The answers to these questions will give you full transparency on the job and any next steps so that you can be prepared for the next stages of the process, whilst also showing how keen you are to know the details of the role.
A great way to impress is to show some interest in the company. You can ask questions like; can you go into more detail about the company’s culture? What do you enjoy most about working here? What are the company’s long-term goals? These questions will give you more of an idea of what it will be like to work there, whilst also proving your interest in the company to the potential employer.
Show how keen you are on the development of your role by asking questions such as; what is the career progression like in the company for someone in this role? How do you measure performance and success in this role? How is feedback given to employees? This type of question will display your eagerness to perform well and succeed in the role.
Extra tip: avoid asking questions which provide yes/no answers. Keep the conversation open to allow natural discussion and avoid those awkward silences!
Next time you apply for a job and the time comes for the interviewer to ask if you have any questions for them, the last thing you should say is ‘no, nothing comes to mind.’ Not only will you be doing yourself a disservice by not gaining further information on the role, but you will show a lack of interest compared to other candidates who may have come prepared with a bank of questions to ask.
Even if you do not necessarily believe there is anything valuable you need to know or would like to ask, be sure to come to the interview prepared with a few questions anyway so that you can show your interest in the company and role.
