What questions should you be asking your potential employer?
After finding the role you desire and want to secure, it is important to tailor your job application to ensure you will stand out amongst the rest of the candidates.
Here are some of DigitalHive’s top tips on making your application one to remember!
Tip 1 - Become recognisable.
A highly effective way of standing out is becoming known to someone already within the company, who may be able to keep an eye on your application for you or ‘put in a good word.’
It pays to show that you are proactive and willing to engage with people within the business, whether that is by connecting with someone on LinkedIn and sending a friendly message, or attending an event where a future employer may be featured.
In this era of social media, it is easier than ever to make connections and engage in conversation with someone who can help you get your foot in the door.
Tip 2 - Make your application easy to read.
Usually, a recruiter will scan-read your CV and application and make a decision quickly based on how you come across and your skills and experience.
So, it is important to ensure that all information you want to display to the reader is readable concisely and comprehensively. Don’t be afraid to break things down and use short sentences and paragraphs.
Use frequent buzzwords which best describe you throughout your application, so that the reader creates a clear picture of you and your best attributes in their mind.
Tip 3 - Showcase your personality.
For a recruiter, it can be a mundane task to filter through hundreds of CVs. It can be an advantage to show what makes you you, by outlining any attributes or achievements that make you unique. Can you speak another language? Have you spent time travelling? Have you completed a charity fundraising challenge? These are the things worth mentioning which give a recruiter an insight into your personality and interests, making you memorable and more likely to receive an invite to the next stage in the hiring process.
Tip 4 - Create an online presence.
Having a positive online presence can be a huge factor looked into by a recruiter when weighing up the decision of offering an interview to you or another candidate.
Often, employers may search your name on Google, or take a look at your social media to gain more of an idea of what you’re about. Ensure your online presence is positive and cleaned up where necessary.
You may even go so far as developing a personal brand, using a blog or online portfolio, or simply through the use of LinkedIn. This way you can give a future employer extra information on yourself, and really sell yourself to them.
Tip 5 - Follow Up
If you have not heard anything back from the recruiter regarding your application, there is no harm in sending a follow-up email or picking up the phone if you have a contact number.
This shows that you are a proactive and keen candidate, which may impress the recruiter and increase your chances of moving to the next stage. If you receive the news that your application has been unsuccessful, it is useful to request some feedback as to why this may have been.
Constructive criticism can only be a good thing, and you will be able to use this feedback to tighten up and improve your next application.
